Organized Tours
The following tours have been organized by the local arrangments committee. Each tour will be held on April 28, the day of the pre-conference workshops and the day before the general conference begins. Please plan to pay for the tours when you register for the general conference.LOCKS CRUISE
This two-and-a-half-hour narrated boat cruise will take you from the salt water of Puget Sound to the fresh water of Seattle's Lake Union via the Hiram Chittenden Locks. We’ll start by walking downhill to Pier 56 to board our Argosy sightseeing ship. From it, we’ll view the Seattle waterfront, the spectacular city skyline, one of the world's largest shipping terminals, and the majestic Olympic and Cascade mountains. The Locks will raise us from sea level up to Ballard's Salmon Bay and Fishermen's Terminal (home of much of the Alaska fishing fleet) and travel along the Lake Washington Ship Canal to Lake Union for good views of Gasworks Park and the "Sleepless in Seattle" houseboat. We’ll board a motorcoach back to Pier 56 to end the tour. (Two blocks inland from the waterfront, free Metro #12 bus service southbound on First Avenue will take you back uphill to the hotel.)

SEATTLE UNDERGROUND TOUR
Dirt, corruption, sewers, scandal! This ninety-minute guided walking tour is a humorous stroll through intriguing, subterranean storefronts and sidewalks entombed when the city of Seattle rebuilt on top of itself after the Great Fire of 1889. We'll begin in Doc Maynard's Public House, a restored 1890s saloon, then cross historic Pioneer Square, heart of Old Seattle, before plunging underground for a time-capsule view of the buried city. The tour guides will be regaling you with humorous stories -- "history with punch lines." The tour will end in the Rogues' Gallery, where you'll find displays depicting the city's past, and Northwest memorabilia. (Tour operators want participants to be prepared for the “moderately rugged” underground landscape; there will be six flights of stairs, uneven terrain and spotty lighting. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. We'll also be walking downhill from the hotel to the tour start site. From the end of the tour, it's a short level walk along First Avenue to free Metro #12 bus that will take you back uphill to the hotel.)

BACKSTAGE AT THE EXPERIENCE MUSIC PROJECT
Offered by popular demand! We’ll walk downhill to the Westlake Center, where we’ll board Seattle’s “space age” Monorail for a quick two-minute ride to the Seattle Center and the Experience Music Project. The distinctive building by architect Frank Gehry (perhaps resembling a demolished guitar) houses a popular music treasure trove of rare sound recordings; priceless instruments; historic photographs and concert footage; and artifacts, costumes and memorabilia. We’ll have a special presentation by the museum’s curatorial staff about the EMP’s museum collections, digital preservation activities, and oral history collections (now numbering more than 800 filmed interviews), then take a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility. Afterwards, you’ll be able to linger among the interactive displays that allow you to be a rock star for a day! Following your EMP experience, ride the Monorail back to downtown Seattle (board the free #12 bus at Third Avenue and Pine Street to ride back uphill to the hotel), or stay on at the Seattle Center for more sightseeing.
