    With the adoption of the SAA Core Values Statement and Code of Ethics (Approved by the SAA Council May 2011) and Code of Ethics for Archivists (Approved by the SAA Council February 2005; revised January 2012) there has come a need to provide examples to promote their understanding and utilization in both educational and real environments.  The Committee on Ethics and Professional Conduct (CEPC) is seeking submissions for its Case Studies in Archival Ethics series that explore the multitude of issues addressed in the Code of Values Statement and Code of Ethics.  Please consider submitting a case study covering one or more of the codes’ areas. We particularly encourage submissions from emerging professionals and authors.

    The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has a new grant opportunity and invites proposals to test and develop museum and library collaborative approaches for bringing about positive community change. Eligible entities are libraries, museums, institutions of higher education, and non-profit community organizations with experience in library, archive, or museum projects and in managing grants for community development work. Award amounts range from $25,000 to $150,000, and a one-to-one cost share is required. See the application guidelines on the IMLS website for details. Application deadline: April 3

    Libraries “are more likely than ever to be confronted with collections containing removable storage media (e.g., floppy disks, hard drives, thumb drives, memory sticks, and CDs). These media provide limited accessibility and may endanger the electronic records housed within, due to obsolescence and loss over time. Caring for these records requires archivists to extract whatever useful information resides on the medium while avoiding the accidental alteration of data or metadata.” Register for the following workshops and earn credit towards your SAA DAS certification!

    The Society of American Archivists is holding its annual conference in Portland, Oregon this July!  Whether you are already planning on attending or are still contemplating, check out the Host Committee’s blog on all things Portland.  Regular updates will clue you in to the local music scene; talk about Portland’s obsession over things like beer, cider, coffee, and food; offer suggestions for cool local events and sites; provide lists of archives you can visit, and in general introduce you to this place we call home.  We love Portland and can’t wait to share it with you!

    From the The Josephine Forman Scholarship Subcommittee: 

    The application period for the 2017 Society of American Archivists Josephine Forman Scholarship is now open.  If you are an eligible graduate student in archival science, apply!  If you know of an eligible graduate student, please forward this information to that student with encouragement to submit an application! Applications must be submitted to SAA by February 28.

    The purpose of the Josephine Forman Scholarship is to provide financial support to minority students pursuing graduate education in archival science, to encourage students to pursue a career as an archivist, and to promote the diversification of the American archives profession. The scholarship is given to applicants who demonstrate excellent potential for scholastic and personal achievement and who manifest a commitment both to the archives profession and to advancing diversity concerns within it.

    The recipient of the award will receive a scholarship of $10,000. Awardees also may be invited to attend the annual meeting of the General Commission on Archives and History and/or the Quadrennial Historical Convocation, with funding provided by GCAH.

    Eligibility:

    The applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

    ·         The applicant must be of American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander descent.

    ·         The applicant must be currently enrolled in a graduate program or a multi-course program in archival administration, or have applied to such a program for the next academic year.

    ·         The applicant shall have completed no more than half of the credit requirements toward her/his graduate degree at the time of the award (i.e., June 1).

    ·         The applicant must be enrolled in a graduate program and begin school no later than September 1 or the fall semester/quarter immediately following the award. 

    ·         Applicants may have full-time or part-time status.

    The NWA Native American Collections Roundtable is offering three $500 Conference Scholarships this year! Please note that you do not need to be a current NWA member to apply.

    One of the main goals for the NWA Native American Collections Roundtable (NACR) is to actively reach out and invite Native American tribes and organizations to participate in the Northwest Archivists conference. In support of this effort, the NACR has three $500 scholarships available to promote the professional development of tribal members engaged in the archival profession and/or non-tribal members working for a tribal archive in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho or Montana. The NWA conference will be held May 17-19 in Boise, ID. In addition to the scholarship funds to attend the conference, all awardees will be given 1 year of membership with Northwest Archivists. Past scholarship winners are welcome to apply.

    A message from Conor Casey: 

    The Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Unconference and Workshops, a project of the Reference, Access and Outreach Section of the Society of American Archivists, urgently seeks a host site in Portland for the week of the SAA Conference in July. Can you help the unconference organizers find a suitable Portland venue?

    The TPS Unconference is a free, inclusive (open to non-SAA members as well as non-archivists), full-day event held alongside the official pay-to-play SAA annual conference. We are seeking a free or almost free host space that can accommodate 100-150 participants. Our target date is Wednesday, July 26, but we can be flexible.

    It doesn’t have to be luxurious, just a space where people who teach with primary sources can gather to share ideas and learn from each other. Schools, museums, libraries, and community or religious buildings are all possibilities. We can supply you with further specifications.

    The Academy of Certified Archivists’ (ACA) early bird application deadline is February 15, 2017 and comes with a reduced exam fee of $25.00. The predetermined locations for the July 26, 2017 exam are Portland, OR (SAA Site); Albuquerque, NM; Annapolis, MD; Chattanooga, TN; Des Moines, IA; and San Jose, CA. There are also pick-your-site locations wherever 3 early bird or 5 regular applicants wish to take it.

    The NWA Professional Development, Education, and Awards Committee is currently seeking applications for a number of scholarships and awards.

    • The At-large Student Scholarship serves as a resource for students from the NWA Regions who are enrolled in an archives graduate program of an accredited institution. The scholarship provides $500 which the student may use towards developing their interest in archives administration as a career choice, through such means as research projects, unpaid internships and attendance at related conferences, seminars, workshops, institutes or other educational opportunities.     • The Professional Development Scholarship is intended as a resource for colleagues currently engaged in the archival profession who are self-employed or receive inadequate employer-provided assistance.     • The Retirement Recognition Award is intended to honor NWA members who have retired during the year between annual meetings. Similarly, the Merle W. Wells / John F.
