International Archives Day

June 9, 2018 is International Archives Day. The International Council on Archives (ICA) invites you to celebrate on the theme of the ICA Yaoundé Conference 2018 "Archives: Governance, Memory and Heritage" which will take place in Yaounde, Cameroon from 26 to 28 November 2018. For more information, see the ICA website on #IAD18.

The WSU Libraries are now accepting applications for two, full-time, 2-year, temporary (non-tenure-track) positions of Mukurtu Library Fellow.

Applications must be received by June 24, 2018. Online applications are required and will include a cover letter addressing the qualifications, a curriculum vitae, and complete contact information for three current references. Join the Washington State Jewish Historical Society and JConnect for the next History Happy Hour on June 19th with Molly FitzMorris. Molly will explain how the history of Ladino in Seattle lead to the language shift from Ladino to English among Seattle's Sephardic Jews, and how this language shift has impacted the Ladino spoken today. The talk highlights some of the most prominent features of this unique North American dialect of Ladino; some of these features can still be found in spoken Ladino, while others have all but disappeared. Though it is difficult to reverse language shift, Seattle may be in a unique position to preserve the Ladino language.

Raoul Wallenberg Dinner - 23rd Annual

Join the Washington State Jewish Historical Society in supporting the Nordic Museum for the 23rd Annual Raoul Wallenberg Dinner, honoring the memory of the Swedish diplomat who intervened to save thousands of Jews from deportation to Nazi concentration camps.

Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish architect and businessman, who served as Sweden's special envoy in Nazi-occupied Budapest from July to December, 1944. During that time, Wallenberg issued protective passports to Jewish persons and sheltered Jews in Swedish-territory buildings, saving tens of thousands of people from deportation to concentration camps. Wallenberg was detained by the Soviet Army in 1944, and reportedly died in a communist prison in 1947. Today, he is celebrated by countries worldwide for his courageous humanitarian efforts.

Call for Archival Assistance for PBS Show
Erin Ross, who works for the PBS documentary series hosted by Ann Curry, called We'll Meet Again – http://www.pbs.org/meet-again/ has reached out to Seattle Area Archivists for an archivist in Seattle to help with their research. 

The series explores significant historic events that have shaped America and its citizens; told through the eyes of people who experienced them directly. Each episode introduces us to two individuals whose lives were impacted by history and we follow them on a journey as they look for a long-lost friend, family member or significant stranger.

Our first season was shown on PBS in January/February this year, and can still be viewed on the link above, or on the channel's Facebook page. They focused of watershed events such as WWII, 9/11, and the Civil Rights Movement. As part of their second season, they are looking for an archivist in Seattle who would be able to help them on our search, by accessing records and helping to find contact details.

Labor Archives of Washington Regional Records Survey

The Labor Archives of Washington at the University of Washington Libraries Special Collections invites all cultural heritage institutions in the Pacific Northwest with records related to labor history and interrelated civil rights and social justice organizations/activism to participate in the Pacific Northwest Historical Labor Records Survey! This information will give the LAW a broader knowledge about where records documenting labor history in the region currently reside, enabling us to compile a regional directory of labor historical records as well as integrate this information into the Society of American Archivists, Labor Archives Section’s Labor Archives of the United States and Canada: A Directory. This survey is being administered in conjunction with a survey distributed to labor organizations in the state of Washington to gather information on the state of labor historical records within union organizational offices.
